Cross Country Body Protectors: Permanent and Mandatory Protection in Eventing
Cross country body protectors are designed to protect the rider's torso during the cross-country phase of eventing. They absorb impact to the following areas:
• the chest,
• the ribs,
• the back,
• and sometimes the lumbar region.
In France, as in many federations, a body protector is mandatory for cross country. An airbag can never be worn alone: it must always be worn over a cross country body protector. This configuration combines the permanent protection of the body protector with the additional protection of the airbag when deployed.
Why use a cross country body protector?
1. Permanent protection, in all circumstances
The cross country body protector provides protection even without a fall and without a mechanism, unlike an airbag which only works if it deploys.
It reduces impact in case of contact with:
• the ground,
• a fixed obstacle,
• a tree trunk or a hedge,
• the horse.
2. Mandatory in cross country events
In eventing, the body protector is mandatory, and the airbag is only a non-mandatory but recommended complement. The body protector is the basis of protection:
• solid structure,
• immediate absorption,
• constant protection.
3. Maximum safety
The cross country body protector truly protects the rider during:
• direct falls,
• tumbles,
• slides,
• impacts against a fixed obstacle.
It limits serious injuries to the chest and ribs.
4. Modern comfort
Modern body protectors are:
• flexible,
• lightweight,
• segmented,
• breathable,
• ergonomic.
Different types of cross country body protectors
1. Traditional high-density foam cross country body protectors
Robust structure, immediate protection.
Advantages:
• high absorption,
• constant protection,
• maximum reliability.
2. Segmented cross country body protectors
Made with articulated panels to follow movement.
Advantages:
• very good mobility,
• improved ventilation,
• long-lasting comfort.
3. Children's & junior body protectors
Adapted to the morphology of young riders.
Features:
• extensive adjustments,
• shorter cut,
• adapted protective foam.
Exact difference between body protector and airbag
The cross country body protector is mandatory and provides permanent protection. An airbag can never be worn alone in cross country. The airbag is worn as a complement to the body protector for enhanced protection. The body protector protects vital areas immediately; the airbag protects upon deployment. Together, they offer the highest level of safety.
How to choose your cross country body protector
1. Perfect fit
A good body protector should be:
• close to the body without compressing,
• well-fitting and stable,
• long enough to cover the ribs,
• short enough not to touch the saddle when seated.
2. Freedom of movement
For optimal comfort, prefer:
• segmented models if you want great mobility,
• high-density foams if you want very firm protection.
3. Type of use
• Cross country training → rigid or segmented body protector
• Eventing → mandatory cross country body protector + recommended airbag
• Young / sensitive horse → reinforced protection recommended
4. Season and heat
In summer, opt for:
• a segmented structure,
• perforated foam,
• breathable material.
5. Morphology
Brands offer:
• men's cuts,
• fitted women's cuts,
• evolving junior sizes.
Practical cases
• You are new to cross country → A segmented body protector will make you feel protected without discomfort.
• You are an eventing competitor → Mandatory body protector + supplementary airbag = maximum protection.
• You are working with a young or unpredictable horse → A rigid body protector offers constant protection against unintentional blows.
• You ride a lot outdoors → A lightweight and segmented body protector provides safety and freedom of movement.
Complementary accessories
• Compatible airbags (to be worn over the body protector)
• Certified helmets
• Breathable technical underwear
• Stretch jackets compatible with body protector + airbag
• Sports bras for optimal support
Mistakes to avoid
• Wearing an airbag alone for cross country (forbidden + dangerous)
• Choosing a body protector that is too large or too short
• Tightening the body protector too much or wearing it over several layers
• Letting it touch the saddle (ineffective)
• Confusing a cross country body protector with a simple show jumping vest (not the same protection)
