The bridged bridle is designed to relieve sensitive areas of the poll and distribute pressure more evenly. For it to truly benefit the horse, its adjustment must be precise and consistent with the entire harness.

• Bridge position

The bridge should be centered, stable, and well-seated on the poll. It should not tilt or shift when the horse chews or moves.

• Essential adjustment order

A noseband is never adjusted first. Before anything else, ensure that:
- the bit is suitable (shape, width, and thickness),
- the headpiece is correctly positioned,
- the browband is the correct length,
- the bridle lies naturally, without excessive tension.
The noseband should never be used to compensate for a bit or hand problem.

• Noseband adjustment

It should be two fingers' width below the zygomatic arch (cheekbone).
- Too high: risk of facial nerve compression and bony pressure points.
- Too low: instability, respiratory discomfort, and interference with the bit.
The bony landmark always takes precedence over visual appearance.

• Tightening: the golden rule

Two-finger test: two flat fingers should fit between the noseband and the nasal bone. They should pass without force or compressing the soft tissues.
Beyond the measurement, observe the horse:
- Positive signs: chewing, swallowing, calm mouth, supple commissures.
- Warning signs: marks, deep creases, cold areas, or resistance after work.

• General stability

The bridle should not turn or slip when the horse is moving. If the bridge shifts, the size or adjustment is not suitable.

• Essential rules

→ A well-adjusted bridged bridle improves comfort without stiffening the mouth.
→ If it leaves marks, acts constantly, or causes resistance, the adjustment must be reviewed.
→ The correct adjustment is one that the horse forgets, while remaining available, relaxed, and receptive.

The bridge bridle is particularly appreciated for sensitive horses or those showing resistance, with a somewhat “locked” poll or mouth. It is also a good option for horses expressing discomfort, such as mouth opening, tension or resistance, even when the bridle is properly adjusted. It is mainly used when seeking greater relaxation, stability and softness in the contact.

Its role is not to increase the rider’s action, but rather to distribute pressure more evenly and relieve sensitive areas, providing the horse with greater comfort and better willingness to work.
