• Focus on fit
A well-chosen half-chap should fit the calf without compressing it, remain stable without twisting or slipping, and naturally follow the ankle's flexion.
When trying them on, fully close the zipper, adopt a “riding” position (heels down), and walk for a few minutes.

- If the zipper pulls or wrinkles, the size is too tight.
- If the fabric creases behind the calf or slips down, the half-chap is too wide or too tall.

• Height and width: the key points
Excessive height can limit ankle mobility and cause uncomfortable creases.
Excessive width leads to a lack of support, chafing, and premature wear.

Pro tip: New half-chaps, especially leather ones, should fit snugly against the calf. Leather half-chaps naturally soften after a few uses. They may slightly “drop” by about 0.5 to 1 cm, which is completely normal.
For this reason, a somewhat snug fit when new is recommended: a half-chap that seems perfectly adjusted from the start risks becoming too wide after breaking in.

• Zipper position and support
The zipper should be at the back, close to the calf. Ensure the top zipper stop is well-secured, as this is often the most stressed area.
The side elastic panels should remain taut while retaining their flexibility.

• Feel in the saddle
A well-fitting half-chap should not cause pinching behind the knee or pressure on the Achilles tendon. The leg remains stable, without any feeling of stiffness.
