A neck cover must protect without hindering the natural movements of the neck or creating pressure points.

• Length and height
The neck cover must cover the neck up to the base of the poll, without pulling backwards when the horse lowers its head. When the head is down, it should not stretch excessively or pull the rug back.

• Width and ease
Check that there is enough space around the throat and shoulders. You should be able to slide a flat hand between the neck cover and the neck, without compression.

• Fastenings
The fastenings should be well-aligned with those of the rug, without twisting the fabric. If too tight, they limit mobility; if too loose, the neck cover risks twisting or slipping.

• Movement test
Walk the horse and observe the neck: the neck cover should stay in place without pulling on the wither or rubbing on the mane.

A well-fitting neck cover follows the horse's movements as an extension of the rug. If it creates noticeable folds or rubs at the wither or throat, the size or adjustment needs to be reviewed.
