Overreach boots protect the bulbs of the heel and the heels against injuries, especially in horses that interfere or overreach. To be effective, they must be correctly fitted: neither too big nor too tight.

• Choosing the right size
The overreach boot must fully cover the bulbs of the heel without dragging excessively on the ground.
Too short: insufficient protection.
Too long: it can hinder movement, wear out prematurely, or cause chafing.
The overreach boot should skim the ground when the hoof is on the ground, without folding or turning over.

• Correct positioning
Once in place, the overreach boot must be well-centered around the hoof, without rotating. The bottom should regularly surround the hoof, and the upper part should not compress the pastern.

• Adjustment and tightness
Excessive tightness can cause overheating, irritation, or swelling, while insufficient tightness encourages rotation or loss of the boot.

• Checks after work
After the session, check for any marks or overheating. Any sign of discomfort indicates a poor fit or an unsuitable model.

For optimal fitting of closed bell boots, it is essential to proceed methodically to ensure both the horse's comfort and the effectiveness of the protection. Start by thoroughly cleaning the hoof and coronary band to remove any sand or mud that could cause friction.

Completely turn the bell boot inside out, then present it from the toe of the hoof, the narrowest area, before sliding it downwards by gradually unrolling it. This technique helps limit pressure on the pastern and prevents excessive twisting of the bell boot, which could eventually deform the product.

Once in place, ensure the bell boot correctly covers the bulbs of the heels, without excessive pressure on the coronary band or compression of the tissues. The bell boot should be well-centered and allow sufficient freedom of movement to accommodate the horse's natural locomotion, at a walk as well as at faster gaits.

Pro tip: In cold weather or with new bell boots, warm them slightly in your hands or in a temperate environment to soften the material. This makes fitting easier and extends the life of the protection.
