A halter is an essential piece of everyday equipment, used for grooming, care, turnout in the paddock and handling.

An incorrectly fitted halter can cause rubbing, unnecessary pressure or a risk of injury. A proper fit is therefore essential.

• The noseband: the key reference point
The noseband should sit approximately two fingers below the cheekbone.
- Too high: it may put pressure on the bones and cause discomfort.
- Too low: it may interfere with breathing or slip down.
Once adjusted, you should be able to fit two fingers between the noseband and the horse’s nose.

• The crownpiece: comfort behind the ears
The crownpiece should sit just behind the ears, without pressing on their base or creating tension. It should neither pull forwards nor slip backwards.
A correct adjustment prevents pressure on the poll, which is a particularly sensitive area.

• The cheekpieces: balance and stability
The cheekpieces should be symmetrical and allow the halter to remain properly centred on the horse’s head. A halter that rotates is often a sign of incorrect adjustment or an unsuitable size.

• The throatlash: security without restriction
The throatlash should be loose enough not to restrict the throat or breathing.
You should be able to fit a closed fist between the throatlash and the underside of the jaw.

• Overall check
Once the halter is fitted:
- it should neither be too tight nor hang loosely,
- it should not create any areas of rubbing,
- the horse should be able to chew, breathe and move its head freely.

• Ethological halter (rope)

- Knots positioned over pressure points
To be used by experienced handlers.
It is not suitable for tying or paddock use.

• Safety halter
Equipped with a breakaway section (leather or a special attachment).
- Breaks under strong tension
- Helps reduce the risk of injury
Recommended for horses tied up unattended or turned out in the paddock.

• Padded halter
Features padded areas on the crownpiece and noseband.
- Softer for sensitive horses
- Helps reduce rubbing
