• The noseband: the key reference point
The noseband should sit approximately two fingers below the cheekbone.
- Too high: it may put pressure on the bones and cause discomfort.

Once adjusted, you should be able to fit two fingers between the noseband and the horse’s nose.

• The crownpiece: comfort behind the ears
The crownpiece should sit just behind the ears, without pressing on their base or creating tension. It should neither pull forwards nor slip backwards.
A correct adjustment prevents pressure on the poll, which is a particularly sensitive area.

• The cheekpieces: balance and stability
The cheekpieces should be symmetrical and allow the halter to remain properly centred on the horse’s head. A halter that rotates is often a sign of incorrect adjustment or an unsuitable size.

• Overall check
Once the halter is fitted:
- it should neither be too tight nor hang loosely,
- it should not create any areas of rubbing,
- the horse should be able to chew, breathe and move its head freely.
